Peter McNeilly

United States Attorney Peter McNeilly

The federal court system in the United States of America is divided up into 94 federal judicial districts. Evergreen Attorneys believes that part of providing top tier federal criminal defense to our clients involves knowing the particular background and approaches of the prosecutors we are facing. To be clear, Evergreen Attorneys is not interested in making nice with the prosecutors or being their friends on the golf course. Instead, we believe that the best white collar crime attorneys may use the predispositions of a particular prosecutor’s office to our client’s advantage.

The chief prosecutor in each judicial district is the “United States Attorney” for the area. The President appoints a United States Attorney with the Senate confirming their nomination for each of the 94 judicial districts.

The day-to-day prosecutors will carry the title of Assistant U.S. Attorney. However, it is the U.S. Attorney him or herself that sets the priorities, policies, and strategies for each individual office of prosecutors. For example, a U.S. Attorney with a background as a securities lawyer may be more predisposed to pursuing investor fraud cases. Or a U.S. Attorney who worked on large drug and gun task forces may not prioritize going after doctors for medicare fraud as much as large drug busts that can make the news.

Colorado U.S. Attorney Peter McNeilly

According to the Department of Justice, Peter McNeilly worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney starting in 2014. Peter McNeilly touts his background as a “leading expert” on fentanyl prosecutions throughout the country. Peter McNeilly also is a lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps. Peter McNeilly’s prior posts include:

  • Deputy U.S. Attorney
  • Chief of the Transnational Organized Crime and Money Laundering Section
  • District of Colorado’s Opioid Coordinator
  • Lead Strike Force Attorney for the Denver Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force’s Strike Force
